ChatGPT now shows paid ads. OpenAI started testing them in the United States in February 2026, and by late September its self-serve Ads Manager was open in 63 countries, including France, the United Kingdom, India and the UAE. Mauritius is not on that list yet. A business registered here cannot open a ChatGPT Ads account today, and OpenAI has not announced a date.
That does not make this a story to ignore. Many Mauritian businesses sell to people in countries where these ads already run, and the most valuable position inside ChatGPT is not for sale anywhere. Here is what ChatGPT ads are, where Mauritius stands, and what to do while you wait.
Everything below reflects the platform as of October 2026. It changes month to month.
What ChatGPT ads are
A ChatGPT ad is a clearly labelled sponsored unit that appears below ChatGPT’s response, separate from the answer itself. Ask ChatGPT to plan a week in Mauritius, and in a market where ads run, a relevant hotel or tour ad can sit underneath the itinerary.
The rules that matter:
- Only some users see them. Ads show to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education subscribers see none.
- Targeting is contextual. Ads are matched to the topic of the current conversation, plus general signals such as location and language.
- Advertisers never see conversations. OpenAI says chats stay private from advertisers and that it does not sell user data.
- Some topics are off limits. No ads next to health, mental health or political conversations, no political advertising, and no ads for users under 18.
- Ads do not change the answer. OpenAI calls this answer independence: buying an ad does not influence what ChatGPT recommends.
Where ChatGPT ads are live, and where Mauritius stands
The rollout has moved quickly. Self-serve buying opened in the US in May 2026, then across Europe, India and the Middle East and North Africa at the end of August, when OpenAI also said the business had passed a $1 billion annualised revenue run rate. The UAE and Saudi Arabia followed in mid September, then seven markets across Southeast Asia and Taiwan.
In Africa, the list stops at the north: Algeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, which came in with the Middle East and North Africa wave. No sub-Saharan country is on it, so Mauritius, South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria are all waiting.
The rule that decides eligibility is simple. According to OpenAI’s terms, as summarised by IndexLab, what counts is the country where the advertiser’s legal entity is registered, and the payment card has to match that entity. Where your customers are does not matter for opening an account. Where your company is registered does.
Why it already matters to a Mauritian business
Most of the businesses we work with here do not sell only to people on the island. Hotels and villa rentals sell to visitors from France, the UK, Germany, India and South Africa. Property developers sell to foreign buyers. Global Business companies serve clients abroad. Their customers are often in countries where ChatGPT ads are already running.
That has two consequences.
Your competitors abroad may already be buying. A French tour operator, a UK travel site or an international property portal registered in an eligible country can target users planning a trip to Mauritius today. When a family in Lyon asks ChatGPT where to stay in Grand Baie, the ad under the answer can belong to an intermediary, not to you.
Some groups may be able to advertise now. An eligible advertiser can target any market where ads run, so a group with a properly registered company in France or the UK may be able to advertise through that entity. Be careful here. The account has to be verified, new accounts can be limited to their home country at first, and billing must match the registered company. Talk to your accountant before relying on it, and do not set up a foreign company just for this.
The part you can win today: being the answer
Because ads do not influence the answer, the most valuable spot in a ChatGPT conversation cannot be bought by anyone, in any country. It has to be earned.
Try it yourself. Ask ChatGPT for the best boutique hotel in the south of Mauritius, or a reliable property developer for foreign buyers. The businesses it names have something in common: clear websites that answer specific questions, consistent information across directories, plenty of reviews, and mentions on third-party sites that AI models learn from.
This is where Mauritius has an advantage. As we explain in SEO services in Mauritius, competition for most local search terms is still low, and the same is true in AI answers. Very few local businesses have done the work, so the ones that do stand out quickly. Our guide to answer engine optimisation covers the method in detail. The short list:
- A complete, active Google Business Profile with accurate hours, photos and categories.
- Reviews on the platforms your customers use, including Google and TripAdvisor for hospitality.
- Website pages that answer real questions in English and French, written so a person and an AI model can both extract the answer quickly.
- Mentions beyond your own site: local press, directories, partner sites and industry listings.
Every one of these also improves your Google rankings. None of it is wasted if ChatGPT ads arrive late.
How to be ready when ads launch here
When Mauritius is added, the businesses that test first will learn the most while prices are lowest. Prepare now so you can start in a week instead of a quarter:
- Set up proper conversion tracking. ChatGPT ads measure results with a pixel and a server-side Conversions API. If you cannot measure a booking, an enquiry or a sale from a click today, fix that first. It will improve your Google and Meta campaigns immediately.
- Clean up your product or room feed. Ecommerce brands can reuse the same feed they send to Google Shopping. Hotels and rental businesses should keep rates, room types and photos structured and current.
- Build landing pages that continue the conversation. Someone arriving from ChatGPT has just asked a detailed question. Send them to a page that answers the next one, in their language.
- Know your current cost per customer. You will judge ChatGPT ads against Google and Meta on cost per booking or lead, so measure those numbers now.
- Set expectations from live markets. Early data from English-speaking markets shows click-through rates below 1%, and advertisers report recommended starting bids of around $3 to $5 per click in the US. Treat that as a reference point, not a forecast for Mauritius.

The short version
ChatGPT ads are not available to Mauritian businesses yet, but they already reach many of your customers abroad, and some of your international competitors can buy them today. The best use of this waiting period is to earn your place in ChatGPT’s answers, which no ad can displace, and to get your tracking and pages ready so you can test the day Mauritius is added.
